I recently came across this claim in a book I was reading:
The War Business, page 231. Paladin 1970.
"British warship sales led to three of the more notorious post war arms fiascos. In 1956, Brazil paid $35 million for a second-hand British aircraft carrier that had been reconditioned in a Dutch shipyard. No sooner had the warship been delivered than a civil war broke out between the Brazilian Navy and the Brazilian Air Force over who should operate the vessel. In time, the crisis triggered major crises for Brazilian Presidents and the resignation of ten admirals and ministers. On several occasions, the two services actually fought pitched battles with each other. The differences were not resolved until 1965, the Air Force would operate the aircraft and the Navy would operate the ship."
Did armed fighting occur between the Brazilian air force and navy over such an issue?

Did this happen?

No, only words were flung across:
"The initial decision on which aircraft should operate from the NAel Minas Gerais caused strained relations between the Brazilian Navy, MB, and the Brazilian Air Force, FAB, who both wished to operate its aircraft from the carrier. The government of President Castello Branco broke the empasse, decreeing (No. 55.627 of 26 January 1965) that fixed wing aircraft would be operated by the FAB, while the MB would operate helicopters from the ship. IIRC there was something like that in the 20's or 30's as part of a wider dispute (coup?) but not in the 60's. Think it may have lead to the suicide of Santos Dumont.
Maybe someone who knows can fill in the details.

Interesting. That site also claims the price paid was only $US9 million, substantially different to the claimed $US35 million. I think we can take this author's claims with rather a large pinch of salt.
