Iran sends six warships to international waters

Quote

Iran has sent six warships to international waters, including the Gulf of Aden, to show its ability to confront any foreign threats, its naval commander said on Monday.

Quote

Iran said on May 14 it had sent two warships to the Gulf of Aden to protect oil tankers from the world's fifth-largest crude exporter against attacks by pirates but ISNA did not make clear whether they were among the six Sayyari talked about.

Iranian waters stretch along the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Sea of Oman. Iran has threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 40 percent of the world's traded oil is shipped, if it were attacked over its nuclear programme.

Luke, the force is strong with you! You remembered all of the "Stealth" systems that Iran has. I wondered if my hint was going to spark some memories. You win in the Iranian, "name that stealth weapon" contest! :P :P :P

Do they still have the 2 American Allen M. Sumner class destroyers and British Battle class destroyer in service?

As mentioned in Wiki, no longer in service (one may take as much salt with that as one may wish).

Should they be stupid enough to cause grief, then a repeat of the 1980's will ensue. The most they could do is to lay mines in certain areas.

This is a Political ploy for those at home. Nothing more.

Apparently at least one of the ships deployed there is a British-made Vosper Mark V frigate.

The only asset they have are the three Kilo submarines they bought from the Russians back in the 90s. I read in some reports that they upgraded it to fire supersonic anti-ship missiles, but I doubt that is the case though.

For all the jokes we make about the 'Stealth Subs' they do pose a not-inconsiderable risk to ships transiting the gulf, for the simple reason they are there and could very easily sink several ships before they were wiped off the map and divert resources away from the Kilos...
