From the context where I found it, it is apparently Vietnam in '57. Looks kinda' like a mini-Typhoon or something, or based on some Brit design. Anybody know what this is?

Maybe, but most images I'm finding show SU-5 as four-bladed and with bigger intake, different nose.

...it looks more "YAK"ish, but none of these are a fit either...(lot's of interesting aircraft here, though)

I agree and on closer inspection it looks like it has a closely cowled radial or cowl as on the Fw190D. It isn't of course. It is also possible (probable?) that it is a turbo-prop.

No idea. But looking at the SU-5 was educational for me...it's both convention reciprocating engine and jet powered, apparently. Never seen that type before either.

The lower intake cowl on the plane I posted question about looks like liquid cooling system housing, to my eyes. So I'm thinking reciprocating.

Was thinking Su-2 or Su-4, but it doesn't look like either one. Something French, maybe?

The same as a Su-2, but with another engine. Or so I've read. :)

While we're on this subject, two of the pics I stumbled across in my search took me here. Some great stuff I'd never seen before. Click sidebar for country...

When did the Thunderbirds become inspiration for real technology, between this and the piloted A-4 rockets? (I know, its the other way around)

I don't know whats more amazing/unbelievable/stark raving mad: if German late WW2 projects if Soviet Cold War projects (thinking wing-in-ground effect things mainly, although those worked)
Oh, and Western non-Harrier VSTOL attempts also fit that mould, IMO. Even the VJ-101, a cool looking plane as it is, but completely absurd. All of this in hindsight of course. ;)

edit: forgot there is more than one flavor of A-4 :)

Well, it's not like the West couldn't get weird. Some Brit concepts...(haven't brought myself to look at U.S. stuff yet...)

Composite propulsion wasn't just for the Russkies.>
