The Red Star as a plane insignia predated the USSR. It was used as a personal insignia in WWI in tsarist russia. During the civil war stars of different colors and shapes were used by both sides. So, in a way, the red star marking is as old as russian warplanes.

"What, why there are german swastikas in that tank?"
Last summer I had to explain like 50 times that no the tank is not a german tank and no, we were not nazis.

at least it is a beautiful symbol, one more reason to hate the Nazis, both the swastika, the stechschritt, the Stahlhelm and the Roman salute, all beautiful except for the fact that everyone associates them with those disgusting animals

Anyone know the background & history attached to that one?
That's no military marking. It was a russian communist symbol, representing the union of workers and peasant (there were other variations, with cogs instead hammers, plowshares instead of sickles, etc.). Later it made it's way into Soviet flag and coat of arms (with the first Soviet constitution, in the mid 20s).
